As a scuba diver, I’ve seen first hand the impact of single-use plastics on our waterways. My first method of defense is to refuse and reduce. Say ‘no’ anywhere I can and replace single-use plastics with reusable alternatives (straws, shopping bags, coffee cup, water bottle). I reuse when I can’t refuse. For example, I use old plastic containers as pencil holders or collect old batteries to bring to hazardous waste, and I turn orange juice bottles into watering cans by drilling holes in the top. The ideas are endless.
